A Closer Look at Indonesia’s Growing Electric Vehicle Market
I plan to have an electric vehicle, an electric motorbike. Is the time right for us in Indonesia to have electric vehicles? Especially seen from the readiness of infrastructure and others.
The insight I got was the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in Indonesia might face some challenges due to infrastructure, affordability, and availability. However, there are initiatives and efforts from the government and private sector to promote EV use in Indonesia, and the market is expected to grow in the coming years.
According to a report by BloombergNEF, Indonesia is projected to have 2.6 million EVs on the road by 2040, driven by government targets and supportive policies. The government aims to have 20% of all vehicles on the road to be electric by 2025, which could help to boost demand for EVs.
Moreover, several automotive companies have announced plans to introduce electric vehicles in Indonesia. For example, in 2020, Nissan launched its Leaf electric car in Indonesia, and Toyota plans to launch its electric vehicle, the C+pod, in the country in 2022. This doesn’t include Chinese players like Wuling, who have also released their electric car in Indonesia, AirEV. These initiatives could increase awareness and acceptance of EVs among Indonesian consumers.
Overall, while there may be challenges to adopting EVs in Indonesia, the market is expected to grow. Electric vehicles could become increasingly popular in the country with government support and private sector initiatives.
