The Social Currency of TikTok Live Commerce: A Digital Ethnographic Study

In the dimly lit screen of my smartphone, I watch as a seller enthusiastically showcases a gleaming timepiece to her virtual audience. “This limited edition automatic watch normally sells for $299, but for the next five minutes only…” Her voice trails off enticingly as comments and heart emojis flood the screen. This is TikTok live commerce in action, a digital marketplace where traditional auction psychology meets social media dynamics in fascinating new ways.

The New Digital Bazaar

Unlike traditional e-commerce platforms or brick-and-mortar stores, TikTok live selling creates a unique social space where commerce, entertainment, and community converge. Through months of observation across multiple watch sellers’ livestreams, I’ve witnessed the emergence of distinct social hierarchies and behavioral patterns that challenge our understanding of digital commerce.
